Digital Village Register
Welcome to the Digital Village Register, your gateway to bridging the digital divide in Uganda. At the National Information Technology Authority - Uganda (NITA-U), we are committed to ensuring that every community, no matter how remote, has access to the transformative power of technology. The Digital Village Register is a cornerstone of our efforts to empower rural and underserved areas with digital tools, connectivity, and opportunities.
What is the Digital Village Register?
The Digital Village Register is an innovative initiative that catalogs and supports the development of digitally enabled communities across Uganda. It is a dynamic platform designed to:
Map and track digital infrastructure in rural and refugee-hosting areas.
Facilitate access to high-speed internet, e-services, and digital literacy programs.
Empower local communities by connecting them to government services, education, healthcare, and economic opportunities.
Through this register, NITA-U ensures that no village is left behind in Uganda’s digital transformation journey.
Our Vision
To create a network of "Digital Villages" where every Ugandan can thrive in the digital era, fostering inclusion, innovation, and sustainable development.
Key Features of the Digital Village Register
Connectivity Mapping
We identify and document areas with limited or no internet access, enabling targeted deployment of the National Backbone Infrastructure (NBI) and last-mile connectivity solutions like Wi-Fi hotspots and fiber optics.
Community Telecentres
Under initiatives like the Uganda Digital Acceleration Project (UDAP-GovNet), we are establishing telecentres in rural and refugee-hosting communities. These hubs provide access to computers, internet, and training, turning villages into digital access points.
E-Service Integration
The register links villages to critical e-government services such as UGPass for digital authentication, health and education platforms, and agricultural resources, making service delivery seamless and efficient.
Digital Skills Development
We partner with local leaders and organizations to offer training in digital literacy, ensuring villagers can use technology to improve their lives and livelihoods.
Real-Time Updates
Stay informed about the progress of digital initiatives in your area. The register provides updates on new connectivity projects, Wi-Fi hotspot deployments, and success stories from digitized villages.
How It Works
Step 1: Registration
Villages are enrolled in the Digital Village Register through collaboration with local governments and community leaders. Register your village today by contacting NITA-U or visiting one of our regional offices.
Step 2: Assessment
We assess the digital needs of each registered village—connectivity, infrastructure, and service gaps—to tailor solutions that fit.
Step 3: Implementation
NITA-U deploys infrastructure such as transmission sites, Wi-Fi hotspots, or telecentres, and integrates e-services to bring the digital world to your doorstep.
Step 4: Empowerment
Communities receive ongoing support, training, and access to tools that drive education, entrepreneurship, and civic engagement.
Success Stories
Rwenzori Sub-Region
Over 36 public service entities connected, 3 transmission sites built, and 8 free public Wi-Fi hotspots activated, transforming access to information and services.
Karamoja Region
The launch of NBI Phase V by H.E. President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has brought high-speed internet to grassroots communities, unlocking new opportunities in education and trade.
Refugee-Hosting Communities
Plans under UDAP-GovNet include establishing 24 telecentres and deploying 172 Wi-Fi hotspots, ensuring digital inclusion for all.
