IT Certification - Service Providers
The National Information Technology Authority-Uganda (NITA-U) is the statutory body responsible for coordinating, promoting, and monitoring IT development across all government entities in Uganda. One of the key services provided by NITA-U under the umbrella of information security is the IT Certification for Service Providers.
Overview:
- Mandatory Certification: All providers of IT services and products in Uganda, whether local or international, are required to obtain certification from NITA-U in their specific areas of operation. This certification ensures that the services and products meet the necessary standards for quality, reliability, and security.
Purpose: The certification aims to standardize the delivery, support, and maintenance of IT services, ensuring uniformity and enhancing the competitiveness of Ugandan IT services on a global scale. It also focuses on consumer protection, promoting professionalism, and enforcing IT laws, regulations, and standards.
Certification Levels:
Levels 1, 2, and 3: NITA-U issues Conformity Certificates at different levels based on the eligibility and compliance of the service provider. Level 1 and Level 2 certifications encourage entities to build competency and capacity towards ISO standard compliance, while Level 3 certification requires full compliance with specified international standards.
Process:
- Application: Service providers must apply for certification through NITA-U's IT Certification Office. The process involves a thorough assessment of the applicant's compliance with the established IT standards.
- Assessment: This includes verification of the company's legal registration, the qualifications of its professionals, and its operational practices.
- Certification: Successful applicants receive a certification allowing them to engage in IT service provision, particularly for government contracts. This certification is crucial for government procurement processes, as all IT services and products must come from NITA-U certified providers.

For Overseas Providers:
Local Partnership: Foreign IT service providers are required to establish subsidiaries in Uganda or enter into joint ventures or partnerships with local companies to obtain certification. This policy supports local IT development and skill enhancement.
Continuous Monitoring:
NITA-U continuously monitors certified providers to ensure ongoing compliance with certification standards. This includes periodic audits and reviews.
