Cybersecurity awareness and training

NITA-U is committed to enhancing the security of information across all government bodies in Uganda through comprehensive cybersecurity awareness and training programs. Here's how NITA-U supports this crucial aspect of information security:

  • Cybersecurity Awareness Campaigns: NITA-U has launched several initiatives to increase public vigilance regarding cyber threats. One notable campaign is the "Be Safe Online" initiative, aimed at educating citizens, government workers, and businesses about day-to-day cyber threats. Through this campaign, NITA-U promotes safe internet practices and educates on the latest cybercrimes, fostering a culture of cybersecurity awareness across Uganda.

  • Training Programs and Workshops: NITA-U organizes various workshops and training sessions targeting government employees from different Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs). These programs cover essential topics like data protection, incident response, cyber hygiene, and the use of secure communication channels. The training is designed to equip public servants with the skills needed to safeguard sensitive government information.

  • Cybersecurity Conferences and Competitions: NITA-U hosts cybersecurity conferences that bring together experts, policymakers, and practitioners to discuss strategies for improving national cybersecurity. Additionally, NITA-U supports events like the Uganda National Cybersecurity Capture the Flag (CTF) competition, where participants can showcase and improve their technical cybersecurity skills. These events not only educate but also stimulate interest in cybersecurity careers among the youth.

  • Information Security Framework: NITA-U has established an Information Security Framework to guide all government entities in maintaining minimum security standards. This framework includes guidelines for awareness and training, ensuring that every government agency understands and implements basic cybersecurity practices. This framework is integral to NITA-U's broader mission of information assurance.

  • Collaboration with Law Enforcement: NITA-U collaborates with law enforcement agencies to train officers on cybercrime investigation, particularly in areas like Domain Name System (DNS) abuse. This partnership helps in building a robust response mechanism to cyber threats by ensuring that law enforcement is well-versed in digital forensics and cybercrime investigation techniques.

Through these initiatives, NITA-U plays a pivotal role in fortifying Uganda's cybersecurity posture, ensuring that government entities are well-prepared to deal with the evolving landscape of cyber threats.
