Information Access Center

The Information Access Center (IAC) is a pivotal service provided by the National Information Technology Authority-Uganda (NITA-U), which is responsible for managing IT services across all government bodies in Uganda. The IAC is designed to enhance the digital transformation and service delivery of government functions by providing a centralized point for information dissemination, training, and public engagement.

Key Features:

  • Training and Capacity Building: The IAC offers specialized training facilities equipped with the latest technology to educate government workers on digital service delivery. It has significantly increased the number of trained individuals, with over 4,470 people benefiting since its establishment. This training extends to IT education, fostering skills necessary for the effective use of e-government platforms.
  • Citizen Interaction: Through its integration with the Government Citizen Interaction Centre (GCIC), the IAC facilitates direct engagement between citizens and government services. It provides an open collaborative space for seminars, workshops, and training programs, allowing for better public understanding and utilization of government digital services.
  • High-Speed Internet Access: The center is connected to the National Backbone Infrastructure, ensuring fast and reliable internet access. This connectivity supports various e-services, including online education, health services, and e-commerce, thereby promoting digital inclusion across different sectors of society.
  • Global Collaboration: The IAC was initially funded by the Republic of Korea under a global initiative to bridge the digital divide. It stands as one of the most vibrant centers among 50 countries involved in this project, showcasing Uganda's commitment to global ICT cooperation and information sharing.
  • Facilities: The center boasts a 30-seater specialized training facility, a 25-seater Internet Lounge, a 50-seater seminar/conference room, and administrative offices. These facilities are all fully equipped and connected to high-speed internet, ensuring a conducive environment for learning and information access.
  • Community Impact: By offering free access to information, IT education, and capacity building, the IAC plays a crucial role in bridging the digital divide. It has been acknowledged for its effectiveness in enhancing public access to government services and information, thereby contributing to the development of an information-based society in Uganda.

Achievements:

  • Awards and Recognition: NITA-U's IAC has been globally recognized, winning awards like the WSIS Digital Service Design Award for its exemplary service in information access. This acknowledgment underscores its success in improving government service delivery and public engagement.

Future Prospects:

  • Continued Development: The IAC is set for periodic upgrades, with plans for refurbishments every five years to keep the technology and facilities up-to-date. This ongoing commitment ensures that the center remains at the forefront of digital service provision in Uganda.
