Official website for the NON-ALIGNED MOVEMENT (NAM), The Uganda Chairmanship 2024-2027
Welcome to NAM Uganda
The Republic of Uganda proudly assumed the Chairmanship of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) during the 19th Summit of Heads of State and Government, held in Kampala from January 15-20, 2024. Under the leadership of H.E. President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, Uganda steers this historic forum of 120 member states toward a future of shared global prosperity, unity, and resilience. As the second-largest grouping of nations after the United Nations, NAM remains a vital voice for the Global South, championing sovereignty, peace, and equitable development in an ever-evolving world.
Through this official platform, hosted in collaboration with the National Information Technology Authority - Uganda (NITA-U), we invite you to explore Uganda’s vision, priorities, and initiatives as NAM Chair for the 2024-2027 term.
About NAM
Founded in 1961, the Non-Aligned Movement emerged as a beacon of independence during the Cold War, uniting nations committed to steering clear of great power blocs. Guided by the Bandung Principles, NAM promotes mutual respect, sovereignty, and peaceful coexistence. Today, with 120 member states representing over half the world’s population, NAM continues to advocate for the interests of developing nations, addressing global challenges such as poverty, climate change, and technological disparity.
Uganda’s admission to NAM in 1964 at the 2nd Summit in Cairo, Egypt, marked the beginning of its journey within this movement. Now, as Chair, Uganda builds on this legacy to foster dialogue and cooperation for a more just and prosperous world.
Uganda’s Chairmanship: Vision and Priorities
Under the theme “Deepening Cooperation for Shared Global Affluence,” Uganda’s tenure as NAM Chair emphasizes collective action to address pressing global issues. H.E. President Museveni has outlined a vision rooted in tackling common human challenges—prosperity through trade, advancements in science and technology, environmental sustainability, crime prevention, and counter-terrorism.
Key Priorities for 2024-2027:
- Regional and International Peace and Security: Strengthening multilateral frameworks to promote dialogue and conflict resolution.
- Combating Terrorism: Enhancing global cooperation to address security threats while respecting national sovereignty.
- Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): Aligning NAM efforts with Agenda 2030 for inclusive growth and resilience.
- International Migration and Humanitarian Crises: Advocating for equitable solutions to displacement and human trafficking.
- Science and Technology for Development: Leveraging innovation to bridge gaps and empower member states.
Uganda’s leadership seeks to harness NAM’s collective strength to influence transformative global processes, including the United Nations Summit of the Future in September 2024.
The 19th NAM Summit: A Milestone in Kampala
The 19th NAM Summit, hosted at the Speke Resort Munyonyo in Kampala, marked a historic moment as Uganda took the baton from Azerbaijan. Attended by over 90 member states, including 30 heads of state, the summit showcased Uganda’s diplomatic stature and organizational capacity. Discussions centered on multilateralism, peace, and solidarity, with a strong call to resist unilateralism and champion the Global South’s interests.
The event also highlighted Uganda’s commitment to technological excellence, with NITA-U ensuring seamless connectivity and digital support throughout the summit.
